Midsize Cars in the United States

October 4, 2010

midsize carsWhen we hear the word “cars”, there is no doubt we will think about vehicle designed to carry passengers powered by an internal-combustion engine. Cars have become a necessity in today’s fast paced world. Since the invention of the first steam powered car in 1672, cars have become an integral part of our lives. When we are talking about cars, we cannot separate it from The United States. It is the largest vehicle country in the world. According to the US Bureau of Transit Statistics, there are about 250,844,644 registered passenger vehicles in the US in 2006

People in America consider mainstream mid-size sedans, such as Toyota Camry and Ford Taurus to be the typical and most common body style. There are several reasons why midsize sedans are very popular among Americans. The first one is the fact that they have more space than compact cars (cars which are larger than superminis), but they are more efficient than luxury sedans (cars with sophisticated equipment, performance, comfort, design, technological innovation, or features that convey brand image or prestige). Their four doors design and comfortable seating are beneficial, plus they do not cost as much as oversized full size sedans. Most consumers find that a midsized vehicle is suitable for them to drive their family around town. Although a larger car may be more comfortable on longer road trips, a midsize car is the ideal vehicle for everyday activities.
The second reason is that midsize sedans are more fuel efficient than full size sedans, minivans, or SUVs. With the rising price of foreign oil, this is definitely the alternative that people are hoping for. They can drive their cars without having to worry about the fuel cost. It is also beneficial for the environment because these cars consume less fuel than other popular vehicles.

The third reason is the hybrid vehicles technology. Although the original hybrids were compact cars, you can find a battery/gasoline hybrid in any class of vehicle. People buy hybrid cars because they do not pollute the environment, they do not depend on the oil, and they become more and more affordable. The more consumers buy hybrids cars, the positive effect on the environment and the country’s dependence on foreign oil will improve. More auto makers produce hybrid models to respond to consumer’s demand.

In addition, midsize vehicles tend to handle better than smaller or larger cars. The weight distribution of the car over its axles creates a very stable center of gravity. This allows the car to take turns without leaning too hard to one side or the other, and it reduces the risk of a midsize car actually turning over during a sharp turn. Most midsize sedans on the market today have front-wheel-drive, which enhances their maneuverability and makes them even more responsive and stable. Front-wheel-drive is superior to rear-wheel-drive when it comes to driving on wet or icy roads, as well, because the weight of the engine bears down directly on the front wheels and keeps them in contact with the road.
Last but not least is the fact that midsize vehicles are family friendly. Most families today have four members or less. That is why midsize sedans are the perfect choice because it balances space and expense. Four adults can sit comfortably, and children can fit even better. You do not have to spend the extra money to buy a minivan or an SUV to get a comfortable four door vehicles. The trunk space is also more than enough for family’s needs, whether you carry grocery or sports equipment.
